Some visitors use blockers that drop analytics requests. crowne counts no visitor whose requests do not arrive. This page tells how blockers find analytics, so you can pick a setup that loses fewer visits.
How blockers find analytics
- By host. Filter lists name analytics hosts, such as
in.crowne.io. The blocker drops every request to a listed host. This is the most common rule. - By path. Lists also name paths, such as
/analytics.jsor/collect, on any host. - By DNS. A CNAME, such as
stats.example.comtocname.crowne.io, hides the real host from a host rule. But uBlock Origin on Firefox looks up the CNAME of each request by default, and DNS-level blockers, such as Pi-hole, NextDNS, and AdGuard DNS, see every CNAME. When the target is on a list, they block the name that points to it. Chrome and Safari give extensions no DNS lookups, so extensions there cannot see a CNAME.
Each setup against blockers
From strongest to weakest:
| Setup | Host rules | Path rules | DNS rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proxy, script and events on your paths | Passes | Passes, if your paths do not look like analytics | Passes |
npm package with a proxy endpoint |
Passes | Passes, if your path does not look like analytics | Passes |
| Custom domain | Passes | Passes | Blocked when the target is listed |
| npm package, events to crowne | Events blocked | Passes | Events blocked |
| Script tag from crowne's CDN | Blocked | Passes | Blocked |
The strongest setup
Serve the script and take events on paths of your own site with the first-party proxy. No request leaves your site's host, and no CNAME points away from it, so no rule can separate crowne's requests from your site's own requests.
If you cannot run server code, use a custom domain. It passes host and path rules, and it loses only the visitors whose blockers look up DNS.
What crowne does not do
crowne does not try to hide from blockers in other ways. It does not change its paths or names at random, and it does not mix its requests into other traffic. A visitor who blocks crowne on purpose stays blocked.
